Apes of Rath

Creature — Ape2 generic manaGreen manaGreen mana

A pun stapled to a Lhurgoyf-sized body, and the trade it asks for is the oldest one in green: stats now, tempo later. Five power for four mana was a genuine premium when this was printed, and the cost of that premium is a vacant untap step every time you swing. The drawback isn't a downside slapped on for flavor; it's the structural valve that lets the rate exist at all. A 5/4 that attacks every turn would have been outrageous in its era, so the design hands you a 5/4 that effectively attacks every other turn unless you find a way to untap it yourself. That conditional opens the only deckbuilding question worth asking around the card: anything that untaps your creatures (or anything that lets the body matter while tapped, like a defensive role you never actually use) converts the drawback from a real cost into a rounding error. Left alone, it's a beater that spends half its life recovering from its own aggression. The flavor of an ape that mauls and then needs a breather is exactly the mechanic, which is the kind of one-to-one read between name, art, and rules text that the period specialized in. It is not a build-around so much as a beater with an honest invoice attached.
