Persist arrived as a keyword most at home in black and green, the once-and-back recursion that brought a creature to the battlefield with a debuff already attached to it. This Scarecrow does something neither of those colors offered: it hands persist to a white creature, on demand, for two generic mana, as often as you can pay. The grant expires when the turn does, so the skill is timing the gift the instant before damage or a removal spell resolves rather than parking it early. What that turns on is the loop persist has always invited: a creature returns only if it died clean, with none of those death-counters left on it, so anything that wipes counters away (or any body that lowers its own toughness to die a second time) can cycle forever. Bolting white into that interaction is the whole point, since white rarely handed itself persist. The colorless five-mana 3/3 frame is incidental; this is a repeatable enabler that supplies the recursion white usually has to scrounge for, while asking you to bring the rest of the machine, a sacrifice outlet and a counter-clearing effect. It is combo infrastructure wearing the costume of a beatstick, the kind of off-color keyword donor that drags a buried mechanic into a corner of the color pie it was never built to occupy.
