Ankh of Mishra

Artifact2 generic mana

Built when the rules around mana, lands, and pacing were still being negotiated rather than assumed, this is among the original designs that treated the land drop itself as an action worth taxing. The shape is symmetric and trigger-based: every land entering deals two damage to its controller, the Ankh's own pilot included, and that mutual exposure is the design's load-bearing tension. (Because it deals damage rather than draining life, the bite can be prevented or redirected by anything that interacts with damage, a distinction that matters more in modern shells than it did at the time of printing.) The card was tuned for a moment when decks ran more lands than they needed and when fetching, bouncing, and replaying lands was not yet the engine of the format; two damage per land was a steady bleed against any normal curve and a punitive one against anything trying to ramp. It is the urtext of the later "lands hurt" family, the question that Zo-Zu the Punisher would eventually reframe as a creature: a two-mana artifact asserting that the act of playing Magic normally should have a cost. It also became a load-bearing piece of the original land-destruction shells, where stripping the opponent's lands while their own replays chipped them down compressed the clock into something genuinely oppressive. The card lives mostly as a historical artifact now, but the design question it asked (what if the most basic action in the game had a price?) has never fully gone away.
