Handing your opponent the decision is the whole gamble, and it cuts both ways. The five-card dig is real card advantage in the abstract, but the payoff routes through an adversary who will always offer you the worst creature available: if the reveal contains a fattie and four mana dorks, you get the cheapest body and bury the rest. The design tension is that the spell answers to the floor of your creature base, not its ceiling. Most reanimator-style cheats hand the controller the target; this one inverts the relationship, rewarding decks where every creature card is roughly interchangeable and worth putting onto the battlefield no matter which one survives. That same opponent-choice clause becomes pure upside the moment you stack your library so the "worst" option is still a game-ender, or when there is only one creature among the five to begin with. The downside is a weighted bet rather than an even one: the more uniform your creatures, the less the choice matters, and the more you can rig what sits on top, the more the penalty evaporates. The graveyard clause adds a second axis, since the four cards that miss are not wasted in a deck that wants bodies in the bin. This is a hard-mode cheat-into-play effect, built so that the price of the five-mana dig is conceding control of the outcome to the one person at the table least inclined to help you.
