Ancestral Memories

Sorcery2 generic manaBlue manaBlue manaBlue mana

A snapshot of mid-nineties blue, when deep-dig spells came with a tax paid in cards rather than in life or extra mana. Seven seen, two kept, five sent straight to the graveyard: that loss is what was supposed to keep the rate honest, an attempt to price card selection so that you take the best two and surrender the rest, no looping, no card-advantage feast. The triple-blue cost reinforces the brake, planting it firmly in mono-blue's lane at a time when fixing was scarce and three pips of one color genuinely cost something. What reads as a clumsy ancestor improves through a later lens: efficient diggers that came after let the surplus feed a graveyard you actually want to fill rather than simply rot. Here the five cards binned off the top are pure cost, a downside the design never tried to convert into upside; the spell predates the era when self-mill became a resource instead of a penalty. That gap between intent (selection with a sting) and what a loaded graveyard can do in a modern card pool is the most honest thing about it. As sorcery-speed filtering it was true to its time: pay heavily, see a lot, keep a little, and live with what you buried.
