Animating your Forests into Elves looks like a build-around gimmick until you notice what it does to a tribe that scales off its own count. Every Forest you control becomes a 1/1 green Elf that is still a land, which means it feeds anything keying off Elf count, it answers to lords and effects that care about the creature type, and it can be sacrificed to the activated ability printed right here. The catch is the same as the payoff: those Forests are now creatures, exposed to board wipes, edicts, and combat in a way that lands never are, so the card trades the durability of your manabase for tribal critical mass. The sacrifice outlet closes the loop, converting that disposable rank-and-file into combat reach: pump an attacker for +3/+3 off the bodies your own mana just became, and the count you spent down was never going to chump-block well anyway. It belongs to the heavy Elf experiments of the block era, when Wizards was pushing the creature type as a genuine engine rather than a flavor tag, and it remains the cleanest single line for the "my lands are also my men" school of Elf design. The 2/2 frame is incidental; the static ability is the structural work, running a tribal payoff, a sacrifice-fodder generator, and a mana-driven pump effect off one clause. Note the scope: it animates Forests, basic and nonbasic alike, and only Forests.
