Altered Ego
Most clone effects make you pick: flexibility or a meaningful body. Duplicate an opponent's best creature and you arrive at exact parity, no bigger than the thing you copied, and any removal that would have killed the original kills your copy just as cleanly. The X counters are how this design refuses that tradeoff. Pay the extra mana and the copy enters a few steps ahead of whatever it duplicated, scaling from a marginal sizing bump early to a finisher's worth of counters once the mana is there. The uncounterable clause solves a narrower, blue-flavored problem: an opponent holding a counterspell cannot answer the clone on the stack. And because the choice of what to copy is made as the creature enters, not while the spell sits on the stack, there is nothing for an opponent to respond to; they cannot strand you by tearing down your intended copy in reaction to the announcement, since the announcement carries no such information. What the design folds together is two simic instincts that usually live apart: blue's insistence that its plays resolve, and green's appetite for raw size. The printed 0/0 is a formality of the copy template rather than a real constraint; the spell never enters as itself unless you let it, which you would not. The result is a clone built to be cast late and deliberately, with full knowledge of the board, when the X is large enough to turn a copy into something the original could not have been.
