Altar's Reap

Instant1 generic manaBlack mana

The instant-speed sacrifice draw, and the timing is the entire reason it exists. The card draw itself is unremarkable: two cards for two mana has never been a rate worth building a deck around. What makes the sacrifice clause matter is when you get to fire it. Hold it until a removal spell points at one of your creatures, and you trade a body that was about to die anyway for two fresh cards, turning your opponent's answer into a wash. Respond to a board wipe by cashing in a creature before the sweep resolves. Sacrifice a token, a dying attacker, or a creature whose enters-the-battlefield value is already banked, and the loss costs you nothing you weren't already losing. Sorcery-speed sacrifice outlets cannot do any of this; they ask you to commit before you know what the turn holds. This one waits with you. It also reads as a free sacrifice trigger with a card-draw rider attached, which is how aristocrats and reanimator shells tend to use it: the two cards are the bonus, the sacrifice is the point. The friction is that it demands a creature you can spare, so it is dead weight in a deck without expendable bodies and a clean two-for-one in a deck built to feed it.
