Alpha Kavu
The activated ability points sideways and inward at once: it pumps any Kavu, including itself, and the shape it hands out is the unusual part. Most creature-pump abilities of its era added power for the alpha strike; this one trades it away, turning a 2/2 into a 1/3 to weather a combat trade or a burn spell. That defensive lever is the tell. It was built as a role-player in a green-red creature theme that wanted to attack, the body whose job was keeping its kin alive while damage went elsewhere, and it can extend the same favor to itself when it needs to survive a turn. The -1/+1 swing is repeatable for cheap, so a wide board of Kavu can soak a sweep of small removal one creature at a time, but the payoff scales only with how many Kavu surround it. The tribe never reached the density to make that activation reliably worth the mana outside dedicated builds. As a piece of tribal infrastructure it is honest about its narrow job; as a card anyone reaches for, it asks for a board state the archetype rarely delivered.
