Its ceiling lives entirely on turns you actually commit creatures to the board: a hand full of answers leaves her dry while a hand full of bodies feeds her. That design pressure points the deck toward explosive one-turn entrances rather than a steady drip of small threats. No fresh creature this turn means no red this turn, which rewards slamming the single biggest thing you can right now over assembling a wide board across ten. First strike keeps her from being pure furniture in combat while she generates. Partner is why she reads as one half of a pairing rather than a finished commander: she needs a spender to dump that surge of red into something lethal, and Halana, Kessig Ranger is the intended companion, the two-card partner set built to share a game. The ability plays fine alongside any red partner hungry for burst mana, but the shape of the card points squarely at the single largest creature you can cheat into play.
