Alabaster Leech

Creature — LeechWhite mana

A 1/3 body for a single white pip is generous on rate, the kind of one-drop wall an early aggressive matchup wants on turn one, but the surcharge it imposes lands on the very deck most inclined to play it. Every white spell you cast afterward owes an extra pip, so the cheaper and more mono-white your curve, the more punishing the leech becomes. This is the inverse of a mana dork: where most one-drops smooth out subsequent turns, this one actively roughens them, and the friction scales with how committed to white you are. The design lives in that contradiction. Its stats are pushed above the line for a single mana, and it collects the difference on the back end rather than the front. The trick is that the back-end charge sorts players in the wrong direction: a mono-white deck pays the most, while a deck splashing one white spell pays the least, flipping the usual logic that punishment cards hurt the unfocused rather than the dedicated. The only controller who gets the body without the tax is one that wants white solely for this blocker and casts almost nothing else white, a window so narrow it explains why the card has stayed an oddity. It descends from a brief early-era experiment in self-taxing creatures, where the drawback was the entire gambit and the undercosted body existed to pay for what the controller would owe later.
