Lifelink here does honest work in the aggressive-white attrition plan, turning every unblocked point into a swing in the race and every trade into a small life buffer. The Phyrexian Cleric line above the text box is the part doing more than the stats suggest: it feeds tribal and type-matters payoffs that reward casting Phyrexians or completing them, so the card earns its slot less on rate than on being the right two words in the type line. Outside a synergy shell that cares about the creature type, this is filler, and it is fine being filler; the design brief was a clean, on-color body that keeps a white aggro deck functional while the payoffs come online. The keyword pays for the body, but the creature type is what separates it from the interchangeable 2/2-lifelink commons that have appeared across the game's history: the Phyrexian tag is where the deckbuilding logic lives.
