This belongs to a wave of tribal lords that handed a single keyword to an entire creature type, and the keyword choice here is a tell about how Cleric decks of the era actually wanted to play. They were built to attack while keeping bodies back: blockers soaked damage and fed the lifegain triggers that powered the deck.
