Lifegain had always been a soft resource, the kind of number that piled up impressively and then sat there doing nothing while the game was decided elsewhere. This is the design that turned the pile into a trigger. The +1 converts your board width into life directly (count your creatures, count your planeswalkers, gain that much), and the token from the -2 converts that life right back into pressure, since it grows every time you gain. Between the two loops the engine feeds itself: more creatures mean more life, more life means a bigger threat, and the whole thing compounds off a theme white had spent most of the game's history struggling to make pay for itself. What makes the package cohere is the zero ability, a payoff sized to the same currency everything else generates. Reach fifteen life above your starting total and you sweep every artifact and creature your opponents control, exiling Ajani to pay for it. That is the constraint doing real work: the wipe is not on a timer or a mana cost, it is gated behind a life threshold you can only clear by leaning all the way into the engine, and it costs you the planeswalker to fire. It is a rare instance of lifegain written as a win condition rather than a stalling tactic, a resource-conversion machine that answers the perennial complaint that gaining life never actually closes a game.
