Agent of Stromgald

Creature — Human KnightRed mana

A red body whose entire purpose is to make black mana sits on one of Magic's quieter color-pie ideas: red and black are allies, neighbors on the wheel, and Alliances leaned on that adjacency to justify a creature that powers the enemy of nobody. The design belongs to a specific era of cross-color fixing tied to flavor (the Stromgald faction's loyalties), where the 1/1 frame is almost beside the point and the conversion ability carries the entire reason to run it. Functionally it is a creature-shaped mana filter: it can chump, it can carry an aura, it dies to anything, but it survives as a repeatable source across turns where Dark Ritual fires once and is gone. The cost structure is the catch worth noting twice. First, you spend a colored mana to make a colored mana of a different color, so this is conversion, not acceleration; it nets you nothing and only matters when the color you have is wrong for the spell you want. Second, there is no tap symbol gating the ability, which means the filtering is unbounded within a turn: pour as much red into black as you have red to spend. That narrow but uncapped brief is exactly why the card reads as a product of an era when fixing was rare enough that Wizards stapled it to bodies and let flavor carry the rate.
