Afiya Grove
Three +1/+1 counters that refuse to come out all at once: the upkeep clause meters them one per turn, you cannot move them at instant speed in response to a removal spell, and the grove sacrifices itself the moment it empties. That timing restriction is the whole bargain. Stat-for-stat it offers more raw power than most early green tricks, but the body it builds is fragile in a way that punishes telegraphing: each upkeep you announce a target before you have priority to protect it, and a counter committed to a creature that dies on the opponent's turn is simply gone. Because the effect is reusable (three discrete pumps rather than one big one) it never functions as a combat trick; it is a slow accumulation engine wearing the costume of a removal-resilient threat, since spreading counters across multiple bodies survives a single point of removal in a way that one fat creature does not. What it represents is green's earliest stab at a counter-based payoff: a self-consuming enchantment that hands out growth on a leash rather than a creature that scales itself. It plays like a tentative first sketch of a mechanic the color would later own outright, the discipline of the upkeep tax standing in for design tools green had not yet invented.
