Aether Sting

Enchantment3 generic manaRed mana

Punishment magic in its earliest enchantment form: rather than answering a creature, it taxes the act of casting one, pinging the opponent a point at a time for the privilege of developing their board. The design hangs on an asymmetry that only matters against the right opponent. A control deck winning through noncreature finishers pays nothing; a creature-dense aggro or midrange deck takes damage with every play it makes, and the burn stacks across a game with no ceiling. That conditional payoff is the entire proposition. The card does nothing in the abstract, sits dead against half the field, and turns into a slow inevitability engine against the other half. Its lineage is the school of red enchantment that punishes opposing tempo instead of trading with threats directly, an idea later sharpened into broader, cheaper versions. What dates it is the rate: one damage per creature spell, four mana up front, no immediate impact on the turn it lands. The trigger keys off casting, not entering, so it fires even when the creature is countered or fizzles, but a single point of damage rarely keeps pace with the boards it is meant to discourage. It is a window into how Wizards thought about taxing creature decks in the early era, before the templating tightened and the numbers grew teeth.
