Adun Oakenshield

Legendary Creature — Human KnightBlack manaRed manaGreen mana

Pay the colors, tap the legend, get a creature card back to hand: this is the recursive graveyard toolbox on a creature body, drafted three decades before that phrase meant anything. The body is beside the point. A 1/2 for three mana of any configuration is a rounding error; the value lives in the activation, which turns mana into card advantage one creature at a time, at instant speed, every turn the legend survives. The triple-color activated cost is what holds the engine in check: it demands you stay open in black, red, and green across the entire game, a fragile proposition on any manabase and a real deckbuilding tax in any era. Lay it next to what came after, and the lineage is clear. Volrath's Stronghold asks only for colorless and a life. Meren of Clan Nel Toth converts death into recursion without spending mana on each loop. Muldrotha turns the graveyard into a second hand outright. This is the first and most expensive draft of that idea: a Jund-colored Regrowth stapled to a permanent, printed before "value engine on a creature" was a recognized shape. Most of what black-red-green graveyard decks have done since is a leaner, cheaper version of the bargain this card struck first.
