The fork in this design is the order of operations. Naming a color before the hand is revealed inverts the workflow that later discard spells settled on, where the caster sees everything first and then makes an informed choice. Here the prediction comes up front: you commit to a color blind, then the hand opens and you take the best card of that color. The reward for guessing right is real (you strip the opponent's strongest answer in that color rather than letting them pitch their worst card, the structural failing of a blind effect like Mind Rot), but the cost is that the spell can whiff entirely when the named color is absent from the hand. That asymmetry is why this never anchored an archetype the way its successors did. Compare the spells that endured: Duress and Thoughtseize show the caster the hand and let them pull the genuine threat, the bomb, the removal spell aimed at their own board, with no guesswork to whiff on. This is an earlier attempt to make discard a two-sided interaction, asking the caster to read the opponent's deck and rewarding accuracy with a clean pull. The format eventually decided that information was cheap enough to give the caster for free, and the prediction tax stopped being worth charging.
