Most pingers do one thing: tap, deal a point, walk away. This one hands the target a consolation prize, and that wrinkle is the whole joke. The key word is "any target," which means the catapult cuts both ways. Fire it at an opposing one-toughness mana dork or chip a planeswalker, and you have also gifted that player a 1/1 Squirrel for their trouble. Aim it at your own face, or your own creature, and the Squirrel is yours: a repeatable, instant-speed token engine that costs you a trickle of life or a body you were willing to spend. That second mode is the one builders actually want. The damage clause is the tax; the Squirrel is the payoff. As removal it is deliberately self-defeating, since killing something refills the board you just cleared. As a token factory it is patient and reliable, churning out green bodies one ping at a time for anything that cares about creature count, Squirrel typing, or sacrifice fodder. The design sits in the silly-token tradition that treats a creature type as a recurring punchline rather than a tribal cornerstone, and this is the supply line: an artifact whose stated purpose (deal one damage) is the thing it is worst at, wrapped around the thing it is genuinely good at (manufacturing rodents on demand). Run it for the army, not the artillery.
