Access Denied
A counterspell that hands you a board is a compromise Wizards has printed in different shapes over the years, but the exchange rate here is the design worth examining. Most "counter plus value" spells reward you with a fixed bonus regardless of what you stopped: a card drawn, a single body, a life swing. This one scales the payoff to the threat's own size, so the bigger the spell you deny, the wider the flying army you keep. Counter a two-drop and you get a trivial pair of tokens; counter a nine-mana bomb and you walk away with a squadron that can end the game on its own. That inversion is the whole trick: the spells most worth countering are the ones that leave you best positioned afterward, which means the card is at its worst when it is least needed and at its best against exactly the plays a control deck fears most. The five-mana price and the Thopter payload point it squarely at multiplayer tables, where big spells are common and a flying blocker-swarm has real defensive weight. It asks nothing of the countered spell's type: creature, artifact, planeswalker, another counter, all feed the same math. The friction is simply that it costs a great deal to hold up, and a dead counter (nothing worth answering) leaves five mana spent on nothing. But when it connects on something expensive, few blue answers convert a defensive play into an offensive one so cleanly.
