Abeyance

A Time Walk for the spell-based stack, packaged as a cantrip. The clever part of the design is the breadth of what it shuts off: not just instants and sorceries, but every non-mana activated ability until the turn ends. Cast at the right moment, it locks a control player out of their counters, an artifact deck out of its tap-abilities, a graveyard engine out of its activations, all while replacing itself. The two-mana instant speed is what makes it surgical: it answers the response, not the threat, slipping onto the stack to strip an opponent of options precisely when they were counting on them. Most disruption of this era asked you to pay a card for the effect; this one refuses the trade, drawing as it denies. The lineage is more interesting than the card's modest footprint suggests. White rarely gets to touch the stack at all, and almost never gets a clean way to tax instant-speed interaction without simply being handed a counterspell. Abeyance is one of the genre's earliest attempts at exactly that: it cannot stop a spell already on the stack, but it can guarantee the next phase of the turn plays out on your terms. The mana-ability carve-out keeps it short of a full lock: opponents still tap their lands and fire mana abilities, and a flash creature or instant-speed permanent can still come down. What gets sealed is the reactive layer, the counters and removal and engine activations that win games in response.
