Abbey Matron

Creature — Human Cleric2 generic manaWhite mana

A defensive blocker that buys its own survival, the design here is the repeatable toughness pump: pay white, tap, and the body swells in the one stat that matters for surviving combat. The cost both limits the ability and makes it work in practice. Because the cost includes the tap symbol, the ability is dead the turn the creature arrives; it has to sit out a turn of summoning sickness before it can ever fire. After that, the timing favors the defender: declare this as a blocker, then tap it to pump after blocks are locked in, and it soaks a much larger hit without leaving combat. That sequencing is the one moment the card delivers on its text. Everywhere else the math degrades, because toughness pumping only matters on defense and the body has no power to spare on offense, so feeding white mana into a 1/3 to make it a 1/6 buys a block and nothing more. This is Homelands' design problem in miniature, a set built around small Human clerics and knights priced and stat-lined for a slow, grindy environment that never rewarded investing white mana to keep a 1/3 alive. The ability reads like a survival engine and functions like a tax on doing anything else with your turn: hard to kill in combat, rarely worth the mana to keep so.
