Abbey Gargoyles

Creature — Gargoyle2 generic manaWhite manaWhite manaWhite mana

A flier with a built-in answer to the era's most aggressive color, stapled to a body that survives most of what that color throws at it. Protection from red here is doing two distinct jobs at once: it cannot be targeted by red burn and it cannot be blocked by red creatures, so against the dominant aggressive archetype of the early game this is both an evasive clock and a wall the opponent's removal slides off. The triple-white cost is what pays for it; this is not a splash, it is a commitment to white as a primary color, and the reward for that commitment is a 3/4 that beats most contemporary fliers in combat and ignores an entire color's worth of interaction. The shape is a recurring white idiom: protection-from-a-color as a way to give defensive white a creature that attacks profitably without raw efficiency. The constraint that fixes the card in its moment is the assumption baked into the design, that red burn and red ground creatures were the threats worth insulating against. Read it as a snapshot of what white needed to fear, and what Wizards thought a four-toughness flier was worth when the answer to that fear was a keyword rather than a stat line.
