The 0/4 body is the whole trick. Connive on a creature with real power would just be a value spell that also swings; putting it on a wall means the +1/+1 counter is pure upside on a body already sized to hold the ground, converting the loot into a blocker that can leave its enters-the-battlefield trigger as a 1/5. Flash is what closes the loop: cast it on the opponent's attack step and you get a card-selection effect that also ambushes an attacker, or hold it up to bluff a counterspell and cash it in for the connive once the coast is clear. The design turns on the tension between wanting to discard something (to grow the body and feed graveyard payoffs) and needing to keep gas in hand, and it resolves that tension by making even the discard a defensive gain: worst case you sink a land and keep a 0/4. Rogue decks want the type, self-mill shells want the connive fueling the yard, and control wants a flash blocker that filters. Because connive is a loot rather than a cantrip, the card costs you a piece from hand to cast and returns a filtered one, so it digs without netting cards. And because the connive fires only once, on entry, the card is a snapshot of filtering rather than a repeatable engine: a single, well-timed dig that leaves a body asking almost nothing of the board to justify its slot.
