A-Demon's Due

Instant3 generic manaBlack mana

Instant-speed card selection at four mana, sold at a life-payment rather than a card-count discount. The trade here is precise: you keep two of the top four and bin the other two, so the card is really a filtering engine that pretends to be pure draw. And it matters that this is a "put into hand," not a draw: it slips past the draw-punishers that tax card advantage from the other side, so effects keyed to the draw step never see it coming. What it does that a straight two-card dig does not is feed the graveyard on purpose. Every card you decline goes to a resource you may not be done with: flashback, delve, reanimation, aristocrat fodder. The two life is the tuition, and it is deliberately cheap enough to pay repeatedly. Where this design earns its keep is the instant clause. Most self-mill or dig-and-fill effects are anchored to sorcery speed because letting a player load the yard at will is powerful; running this at end of turn means you hold up interaction, then refuel on the way out, dodging the sorcery-speed sequencing tax that similar effects usually charge. The name and the framing lean on the classic black bargain: cards and information up front, life on the back end, with no downside beyond the two you pay. It is the kind of workmanlike black filtering that graveyard decks quietly want more of than they admit, because the good half stays in hand and the discarded half is often exactly what you hoped to see hit the yard.
